User Segment Filters

Filters are used to hold the rules that search for customers. Using filters, you can preview a list of customers that are returned, and even download a CSV file for use with 3rd party systems.

This article provides an introduction to filters.

Filters

Filters contain the users that can then be assigned to a segment. You can create numerous filters, a selection of which can then be used to create a single segment.

For example, you could create separate filters to select customers that have placed orders recently, or placed orders over a certain amount, each of which could be assigned to their own segment respectively. Similarly, both of those filters could be assigned to the same segment, which would then contain both customers that have either placed an order recently or over a certain amount.

Filters are comprised of rules, such as:

  • Users with an address in France.
  • Users that have accumulated a certain number of loyalty points
  • Users that have placed an order on a mobile device

👍

A single filter can be assigned to several segments at once.

The use of user segments in the front-end of your store is discussed in more detail in the User Segments Front-End Guide

Managing Filters

User segment filters can be found by navigating to Users > User Segments > Filters

Filters can be managed in a similar fashion to other items in Aurora:

ItemDescription
NameName of the filter.
DescriptionShows the internal description you have given to each filter.
CreatedShows the date and time that the respective filter was created.
ModifiedShows when the filter was last edited.
CSV

Indicates if a CSV file has been generated for the respective filter.
Status

The icon displayed at any time represents the current status of the filter.

Clicking on the status icon will toggle the filter on or off. Once a filter is disabled, it will no longer contribute to the segments that it was previously assigned to.
Edit

Edits the respective filter.
Delete

Deletes the respective filter.
Add Filter

Adds a new filter.

Previews

Once a rule, or combination of rules, have been added, you can preview the results of a filter (or segment) using the Preview button.

👍

Take care when adding multiple rules. Each rule applied will likely further reduce the number of users being returned by the filter. Use the Preview button regularly to preview the results of your filter each time a new rule is added.

Once clicked, a preview section will appear below your list of rules, detailing the users that meet your specified criteria. If you make further changes to rules, you can click the Preview button again to refresh the preview.

CSVs

Some third party platforms, for example those used to manage email communications, can import lists of users via CSV files. CSV files of users can be created based on the results from your filters and segments.

To generate a CSV file for a list of users, navigate to the filter or segment that you would like to export the users from.

1. Click the Preview button.

2. Once the preview has been generated, a CSV icon will appear. Click this to begin the generation of the CSV file for your filter/segment of users.

3. A message will appear, advising that generation of the CSV file has begun. Once confirmed, a Processing Export... status button will appear next to the Preview button.

📘

Depending on the volume of users, and the complexity of the rules you have created, generation of the CSV may take a few minutes.

4. Once the CSV has been generated, the Processing Export... button will change to a Download Export button. Click the Download Export button to save your CSV file.

👍

Can't see the CSV icon?

The CSV icon will only display once a filter or segment has been saved.

📘

If you make a change to the rules for a filter or segment, you will need to generate the preview and CSV again. Failure to do so will result in the previous CSV being downloaded.

Creating and Editing Filters

Filters can be added using the Add Filter button on the Users > User Segments > Filters page, you'll then be taken to the Add Filter page. Existing filters can be edited by selecting the Edit icon on the Users > User Segments > Filters page for the respective filter.

1. You can set your filter as active straight away, by checking the Active checkbox.

👍

The status of a filter can be changed at any time, so you don't need to activate it now. If a filter is enabled, the users returned by it won't be used until it is assigned to a segment.

2. Specify the Filter Name. This is a unique value that will be used to identify the filter when it is used in other parts of Aurora, such as Promotions, or when it is used in your stores front end templates.

3. Enter an Internal Description. This description will be used by you, or other users of Aurora, to quickly understand what type of users the filter is searching for.
