Google Tag Manager (GTM) Guide
The Google Tag Manager (GTM) allows you to include one set of common tags on your site and them manage all other tagging concerns from a single interface.
This article describes how to go about including the Google Tag Manager in the Aurora Templates and covers the basic configuration required in the GTM to work with Aurora's built-in support.
This guide and all it's methods are provided for convenience of use and reference only and is not supported by Aurora Commerce or developed as standard practice as this falls outside the general remit of 'development work' now adhered to, as described in the Design vs Development Guidelines.
For help configuring the GTM, you should contact Google or your Design Agency.
The example templates provided within the Aurora Demo Example Front-end Templates require the use of the Aurora $.frontend JavaScript. Without this, some features will fail (including but not limited to the basket).
Overview
Why use the Google Tag Manager at all?
Setting up the Google Tag Manager for the first time can often be a bit more expensive than just installing a single tagging solution (not always, but allot of the time), so why even use it? Here is a list of the main advantages of he system that are the driving force behind the system:
- Once the installation is completed (by Aurora Commerce) you should be able to add many new tagging services using the Tag Manager User Interface without any coding knowledge or help from Aurora Commerce as it makes allot of common tagging services ‘plug-and-play’ and new services are being added all the time. There are some exception to this, but for a full list of supported services, please see the Google Tagging Documentation provided by Google.
- If a tagging service (e.g. the Google Enhanced E-commerce Tracking code) is changed in any way (updated by Google etc), these changes should normally not require any billable development as the Tag Manager will simply update your tags where necessary on your behalf.
How to use Google Tag Manager (GTM) with Aurora
There are three distinct stages to the set-up process of the GTM within Aurora:
- Create a GTM account.
- Set-up the GTM container(s).
- Add the tags to your Aurora Templates.
- Configure your GTM tags.
