Search Engine Optimisation
Ensuring your product detail pages are optimised for search engines is an important step towards improving their ranking in search results.
This article provides an overview of the search engine optimisation that is available via the SEO tab when editing a product.
Introduction
The Products > All Products > Edit Product > SEO tab gives you the ability to:
- Provide various pieces of metadata for each product
- Specify the filename of the web page
- Redirect a product page using a 301 redirect
Any values provided here will override the default settings provided by your SEO company.
Further Search Engine Optimisation of images can be carried out using the SEO Friendly Product Image URLs feature.
Metadata is information that is used to describe a web page. Examples include meta titles, descriptions, and keywords. With the exception of the title, this information is not displayed to customers directly via your store, but may be used by search engines to help index and present the page in search results.
Filenames form part of the URL used to access a page. One of the factors in determining the ranking of a page in the results of search engines like Google, is a filename that relates to its content.
Redirects can be used to indicate to users and search engines that the location of a page has changed. This can be useful for search engines to update their listings, and to redirect traffic from an old discontinued product to the new product.
See Redirects for more information on managing redirects for any URL.
