Adyen 3D Secure Payment Authentication
3D Secure is an authentication protocol that provides an additional layer of verification for card transactions. 3D Secure allows you to comply with authentication regulations for online payments such as PSD2 SCA, and to make use of the liability shift.
3D Secure 1
There is currently two different versions of 3DS, 3D Secure 1 and 3D Secure 2. Please review the Adyen documentation for further details on the different workflows.
Card schemes and issuers will stop supporting 3D Secure 1 in 2022 and 2023.
Setup 3D Secure
To enable 3D secure payments, you must enable the configuration withing your Adyen account.
- Select the correct merchant in the top left selector.
- Navigation to: Developers > Additional data > 3D Secure
- Select: 3D Secure result
- Click: Save Configuration

Once enabled, the 3DS payment checks will then be displayed for orders within Aurora's order view page.

Aurora will display four possible results for the 3D secure status.
OK - 3D Secure offered, authorised and liability shifted
NOAUTH - 3D Secure offered, but not authorised
NOTCHECKED - 3D Secure not offered
ATTEMPTONLY - 3D Secure offered, authorised, but liability not shifted
Liability Shift Rules
Aurora will only report using the statuses which are returned from the Adyen payment provider. Aurora does NOT perform any internal validation.
For example, status such as "Attempt Only" can only be encountered where specific card issuer responses are returned to Adyen. Due to the complex liability shifting rules that each card issuer implement, please refer to the Adyen documentation for a detailed breakdown on how these are formulated.
